Downhill Ski Boots

Downhill ski boots are designed for alpine skiing and are built for control and comfort. A traditional alpine binding with toe and heel pieces often features three buckles and downhill binding systems generally offer the most control, comfort, and performance on resort slopes. The stiffer construction provides excellent edging and energy transfer from skier to skis as well as allowing a better hold at high speeds with less chance of slip or twist.

The cost of ski boots can vary widely. You'll find entry-level pairs for less than $200, but you can easily spend hundreds more on a high quality pair if you're looking for an expert boot that has advanced technological features to improve stability, comfort, and durability.

It is possible to use a backcountry tour boot in both downhill and uphill skiing but generally, touring boots are not made for alpine, resort style skiing. The main difference in backcountry touring boots is that they are designed for both uphill and downhill travel. Generally, touring boots are only recommended for more experienced backcountry skiers only.

Ski boots that are too stiff will result in the skier leaning back, which in addition to discomfort, can result in injury by increasing the likelihood of knee and ankle injuries.

Before buying a pair of ski boots, it is a good idea to know the general shape, size, and width of your feet. Also, knowing what level of skier you are will make it easier for you to choose the proper boot style and appropriate flex for your ability level.

Ski boot sizing uses what we call a Mondopoint scale. The idea behind the Mondopoint scale is to create a universal boot sizing system for all skiers around the world. To find your Mondopoint size, simply measure the length of your foot in centimeters. Be sure to measure both of your feet, and then size to your smaller foot. Ski boot fitters can always stretch a boot if you have one foot that’s bigger than the other, but it’s virtually impossible to shrink ski boots down to a smaller size.
