There is no universal league mandate requiring players to wear masks. However, some leagues have specific rules, such as requiring pitchers to wear masks while on the mound. In certain areas, organizations set their own requirements. For instance, a local program may mandate players aged 14U and under wear masks when playing infield, but the choice becomes personal after reaching 16U.

Age Recommendations:

  • 7U-12U: It's strongly recommended that younger players wear fielders' masks for safety. Skills are still developing at these levels, and the risk of injury from a fast-moving ball is higher.
  • 13-15U: As players develop confidence and skill, mask use tends to decrease. However, many athletes wear masks for added safety throughout high school and college.

Position Recommendations:

  • Pitchers: While not universally required, pitchers are considered the most at risk because of their proximity to the batter and their defensive stance on the mound. It's highly recommended for pitchers to wear a mask.
  • Corner Positions (1st and 3rd base): These positions are also at high risk due to their proximity to the batter, and players in these positions are often advised to wear masks.
  • Middle Infielders (Shortstop and 2nd Base): While these positions are farther from the batter, they’re still vulnerable to "bad hops" and collisions with base runners. Many recommend masks for these athletes.
  • Outfielders: At the youth level, some leagues recommend masks for outfielders, but at higher levels (13U+), they’re typically not necessary.

Size selection for masks is similar to batting helmets. Measure the circumference of the player’s head and follow the brand’s sizing guide. The mask should fit snugly and cover the entire face, from forehead to jawline. It’s normal for the mask to feel a little tight at first because the padding will soften over time. Use the "Shake Test" to ensure the mask stays in place when moving your head.

While masks offer significant safety benefits, there are a few limitations to consider:

  • Visibility: Some players worry about visibility while wearing a mask, but most players adjust quickly. With practice, visibility usually isn’t a major issue.
  • Sunglasses: Masks can sometimes interfere with wearing sunglasses, but with slight adjustments to the fit, sunglasses can still be worn. Ensure the straps are loosened enough to fit both the mask and the glasses comfortably.
  • Hats & Visors: Unfortunately, hats and visors don’t fit with fielder’s masks due to the mask sitting at the hairline. If sun protection is a concern, you must rely on sunscreen and sunglasses.
