For the 2018 season, the BBCOR-certified Louisville Slugger Select 718 baseball bat was all the rage among power hitters. The Select 718 features a slightly end-loaded feel that is ideal for heavy hitters. The composite handle combines with an aluminum barrel constructed from ST 7U1+ alloy. The result? A durable bat with great shelf life that will provide you with superior pop on contact. Select 718 bats also feature TRU3 technology that practically eliminates sting in the hands on mishits. This bat also doesn’t require much break-in, so you’ll be able to use it pretty soon after you purchase it. The Speed Ballistic End Cap extends the barrel length of the Select 718, which leads to better overall weight distribution and more control in the hitting zone.

### Expert Notes

After a hiatus in 2017 (there is no 717 bat), the 718 is a response to a number of collegiate players who were in love with the big swing of the 716. The 718 Slugger is recommended for strong players who want a heavy-swinging bat in the two piece hybrid realm. The good news is that Louisville Slugger makes bats for other types of hitters too. The 918 Prime would serve well for hitters that like a nice light swing and a decent sized barrel. The 618 works well for those who want the lightest swinging bat that Slugger makes. The 518 serves the needs of value-seeking, single-piece aluminum bat fans.​

The Voodoo is an older model. It's been discontinued and replaced by a new bat called The Goods. Both are very similar in design. The Voodoo is a heavier bat designed for larger players who want more power and distance. It's one of the better performers in that two-piece design; it's a composite handle with an alloy barrel, which means they call it a hybrid because it has both materials inside the bat (alloy and composite), giving it an enloaded feel.

What do you think of when you hear the word “beast?” Strength. Force. Power. If you’re a power hitter, then the Easton Beast X Hybrid may be a great bat choice for you. During the 2018 season, the Beast X Hybrid was the successor of the Easton Z-CORE baseball bat. The Beast X Hybrid is constructed with Advanced Thermal Alloy, also known as ATAC alloy. ATAC alloy is responsible for the Beast X Hybrid’s pop --  or its explosive sound. The Beast X Hybrid comes with Easton's X-tended barrel design that features Z-CORE internal core technology. This lengthy barrel results in a massive sweet spot. Easton also added a 1.4mm Hyperskin grip to each Beast X Hybrid bat, which guarantees zero sting in the hands on mishits. The 2018 Easton Beast X is the new version of the 2017 Easton Z-Core Hybrid. They both use the same Z-Core barrel that was made famous in the 2016 version. If you’re a player who likes a slight end load to their bat, wants the largest barrel on a hybrid bat, and seek a good value on a performance two piece bat, the Beast X could be for you. In terms of marketing appeal and some minor upgrades, the 2018 Beast X Hybrid does come equipped with a new name for its barrel. The alloy is an upgrade, in Easton's view at least, in terms of durability and performance. The tactile difference between 2018 and 2017 is the thicker grip (1.4mm), when compared to the 1.2mm grip for the 2017 Z-Core Hybrid.

Ghost X

### Expert Notes
Although Easton’s Ghost X bat series was discontinued in 2019, it continues to haunt pitchers (including me). Power hitters in particular rave about how big the two-piece, composite Ghost X bat’s barrel is while not sacrificing swing speed, which leads to smashing balls on the sweet spot. The most recent 2019 Ghost X evolved from older Ghost models by allowing for very little vibration when you hitters out there get jammed on a filthy inside fastball. The natural evolution from Easton’s legendary Mako bat series, their Ghost X bat line is still highly sought after by hitters of all ages and skill levels. And since a Ghost X bats’ power doesn’t diminish over time, you hitters should expect a power boost when wielding this Easton stick at the dish.

Velo

### Expert Notes
The longest lasting metal bat series on the market is still at its peak. Rawlings legendary Velo series returned in 2022, with a Velo ACP release that I’ve heard hitters say offers unparalleled balance at the plate. Over time, the Rawlings Velo series has evolved by incorporating the ACP (Accelerated Carbon Performance) line that adds extra carbon in the barrel, which we’ve heard does a lot to increase pop. While Velo’s aren’t the best looking bats you’re going to find, they make up for the plainness with top-notch performance. Rawlings’ resilient Velo series should continue to be a favorite for hard-nosed hitters who prefer production over flash.
